2/10 Update
My best friend is one of the best welders/artists I know. We’ve been friends since we were 6. He does really crazy artistic welding and makes things look like liquid metal.
Over the past couple years I’ve noticed there is a gap in the market, from basic legs to unique designs. The market for legs is either basic or it goes to the moon and is very costly. There is no middle ground right now. So I’m hoping to change that.
We co-developed this line of legs for the my company. They are all rendered in Brass right now, but they can be modified to any color, patina, or finish.
The challenge with making legs out of solid bronze or brass is cost and then the complexity of welding the substance. For example, there are probably only 3 or 4 people in the city of Chicago I would trust to weld solid brass, it is very hard to do correctly. Then the other challenge is you need about 2x the substance compared to steel. So for example 1/4” steel can hold X amount of weight, well in brass you’d need 1/2” brass.
Erich works with a substance called Vero Metal which is like painting real metal onto legs. Vero Metal is a German company and it requires people who work with it to take classes, meet certain requirements as a user, and have the skill to do it correctly. It is very hard to work with the substance. Erich lives in Connecticut and flew down to Dallas to become. certified with Vero Metal. Vero Metal enables you to take take steel and make it look like real bronze, real brass, or countless other options.
We are going to be releasing these legs to my website in a couple months, but I figured this might be something you’re interested in as I know you wanted something unique.
The last time we talked you mentioned shifting to these legs. So I have provided them as the option for the tables below. The price below on each table includes these legs, so we can change if needed, please let me know.
Option 1
Hawaiian Mahogany
Finished Example
Hawaiian Mahogany slab table
Note on this picture above. Please reference the image above for color only. The figure and the grain in the actual slab above is different. Also, the actual slab is darker in color and closer to monkey pod.
This species is rather special to me. I lived in Hawaii for 1 year in between careers before I found woodworking. At the time I made wooden bowls and pens. I visited the woodworking museums in Hawaii and started to imagine building furniture for folks like you one day.
You can see the Mahogany trees from the Hilo airport on the Big Island and they are amazing. Mahogany was planted around the 1900s and imported to the Island. The wood is used for musical instruments and fine furniture as well.
This slab has locations for multiple Bowties at each end. This slab will be 10’-10’6” by 44”. There is a variance in length because we’d need to see the ends of the slab in person and make a decision together on the length. Sometimes the ends of slabs have lots of cracks and most likely we can stabilize them but sometimes we can’t until we see it.
Price: $13,700
Delivery: $1,200-$1,800 for delivery, I can request a quote.
Setup: We can provide setup if you would like. The other option is for you to use local movers to setup onsite which should run about $400.
Option 2
Monkey Pod
Slab Notes.
This slab was actually on the bottom of a stack of about 5000 pounds of wood, so they grabbed one closer to the top of the pile. It doesn’t have the cracks you want, but it shows the color a little better.
Monkey Pod can have dark streaks in it, but this particular tree is a little bit more blond, some darker highlights but not the same as Option 3.
Below is another picture of from the same tree, different cut showing the color a little better.
Finished Example
Monkey Pod
Monkey pod wood, also known as Samanea saman, is a highly regarded hardwood native to Central and South America, though it is also found in parts of Southeast Asia. It is prized in furniture making for its unique blend of beauty and durability. The wood's color varies from light golden brown to a rich reddish-brown, often featuring dark streaks and a striking, intricate grain pattern that makes each piece distinctive. The grain is typically smooth and fine, giving it a polished, refined appearance when finished. Monkey pod is often used for high-quality furniture, including tables, chairs, and decorative items, due to its combination of aesthetic appeal and resistance to wear. While not as rare as some other exotic hardwoods, monkey pod is still considered somewhat scarce in commercial markets due to its limited geographical range and the relatively slow growth rate of the tree. It is often harvested from trees grown in tropical regions, and sustainable harvesting practices are increasingly emphasized to ensure its availability without contributing to deforestation. Its rarity, combined with its rich visual and functional qualities, makes monkey pod wood a sought-after material among artisans and furniture makers.
