Indiana Black Walnut
Raw Slab Dimensions
12’ Length
29-36” Width
Notes
This is a rough image of the slab above. Please note color, sapwood location, and layout will be adjusted pending your input.
Color reflected above is not accurate as there is no finish. We can and do provide a sample of the off-cut prior to any final finishing decisions. 95% of our tables are finished in a Satin sheen.
Should you proceed with this slab, we have multiple options for layout and during the design process you can select certain aspects to include or exclude.
These slabs require minimal epoxy work.
We will render these slabs in 3D and request updated images with water on the slabs, should you choose to proceed with the design deposit.
Nakashima Style Trestle Base
Notes
I think we would need to work out the details of the base, along with joinery and I know Robert has some thoughts of what he’d like.
We would use 3” wood minimum to construct this base due to how long your table is and I verified by looking at his work that on longer tables he uses 3” thickness due to the potential for a wobble.
That said, if you choose me to build this base, I will build a longitudinal support frame at the top. This would be mostly concealed, unless you bent over and looked but I believe it is necessary. This structure would be drawn in CAD prior to purchase to make sure you’re comfortable with it.
Design & Fabrication Notes
The following details are all included in the price below.
25 Degree Chamfer 3/8” depth on bottom of table top
1/8” round-over on top of table
Indiana grown Walnut top and base
Details regarding joinery of the base accounting and variance within reason in design have been accounted for in price in the Nakashimi Style. We discussed making this a little product development and I’m up for it. If you suggest something that is say outside of the Nakashimi Style, say really out there, then I’ll let you know and we can have a conversation about it. For example, bent laminations, crazy curves, changing to Teak wood, or something like that.
Quantity 6 Bowties, wider traditional style, (requiring client approval for style and location) will be installed along middle seam.
The raw slabs are 2” thick. I would suggest keeping the top for stability purposes at 1 1/2” inches thick. That is a little bit of a difference from Nakashimi, but from a stability perspective it is significantly better long term so the slabs do not move as much.
Please note, these are live edge products, and you can expect them to shift over time and this is completely natural. The movements are also what makes the piece one-of-a-kind.
Note on Price
We have never once increased price on a client and I have had to take significant hits to our bottom line. I expect this to happen on a given amount of projects per year and spread the risk across everything we do. We are also not like most shops, I say no to 90% of projects that come our way because of the risk. In the 7 years I’ve been doing this, I only have one friend who is still in business and it is largely because most woodworkers do not account for risk.
You’ll also notice the amount of detail I’ve covered above, we try to think through every project and every detail so we stay in business.
